Stunning Fireplace Makeover

I have a great project to share with you today, and it's one that I am very proud of!

My mother and I were helping a client change the style and theme of her home, and she had just a standard electrical fireplace that she was considering getting rid of.

Rather than just tossing it out, I convinced her to let me have a crack at it. I told her that I could makeover for very little cost and then she can save some money on buying a new one. She was all about me doing that so here we go. Here's what I did...
This is the fireplace before. So not the worst thing in the world but it just looked a little too pre-fab for my taste and also no longer suited the rest of the updates we had already made in the client's home.
I felt like the fireplace needed a bit of a luxurious look to it, so I added this fancy trim. Super easy to do, too! I cut it using my sliding miter saw from Ryobi at a 45-degree angle and then attached it using an air nailer.
I also got a fancy decorative on-lay at Home Depot to put in the middle. I attached this with my air nailer, too.

I painted the fireplace with primer. I used Zinsser Bull's Eye Primer. I did a primer for this because the fireplace was very dark and I didn't want to have to do multiple coats with my paint — hint, I am lightening up the fireplace ;)
For paint, I chose the shade Vanilla Frosting from Country Chic Paint.
This is what it looked like with one coat, so I followed it up with a second coat. I'd like to note, too that I didn't sand before painting.

This fireplace was not real wood, so sanding would have wrecked the surface.
I made sure to paint in all the little crevices of the decorative trim I added. Once the paint had dried, I decided that the top of the fireplace needed something special.
I got a piece of live edge soft maple to place on top of the fireplace. For extra security, I nailed it to the top with my air nailer.
Another successful makeover and the client was beyond satisfied with her new piece!

I don't think she'll be buying a new fireplace anytime soon! This makeover only cost her $40, too! So bonus!
Here's a side by side comparison!
