My daughter and son-in-law bought their first house - money is tight. What do you do when you want the best but only have "old and outdated"?

You redesign with paint and your own artistic vision. It's easier than most think.
I'll start with the before pictures and show you how we transformed her room.
She paid $20 for the Drexel nightstand (top) at an estate sale, the dresser was given to her, king headboard $40 from Craig's List, and the nightstand above, $10, rummage sale.

Gathering pieces of furniture all over town and making them all match is a huge project – but it can be fun if you have a plan.
  • Decide what pieces you need and the sizes. Do you want them matching or of the same style?
  • Set a budget
  • Look for garage sales, estate sales, Craig's List postings, etc. Patiently wait to find just right pieces.
  • As you look for your pieces, decide on the look you are going for – search blogs, Pinterest, Facebook forums, etc. for ideas.
Choose colors and buy your supplies to repair, prep, paint and protect your pieces.
We primed everything with our HomeRight Finish Max after prepping by cleaning, repairing and sanding.
We also sprayed the Pure and Original's White Silk chalk type paint. Since it was so thick, we had to thin it and still got a little spitting, BUT I love texture so in my eyes it was perfect.
We applied a topcoat to seal the white and then applied glaze with a brush, wiping off as we went along to achieve an antiqued look.
After the glaze, we applied two coats of the poly to protect it and then added new hardware.
The room is bright and cheery and very minimalistic looking with all the white furniture. I always amazes me how dull and boring furniture can be transformed with paint - especially white with the antiquing effects.
The Drexel got matching knobs and the other, the one on the left got a mix - all from Hobby Lobby.
It is possible to take different pieces and make them matching - not bad for just a few dollars!

Pure and Original supplied the paint for this project so I could try it out and review it. I'd say they passed with flying colors! Beautiful, quality products.
