First I got most of the stain out with Clorox water. Then I used Kilz.

Head to your big box hardware store and get a few rolls of their paintable wallpaper. Slap it on your ceiling, paint it whatever color you like and be done with it. You can leave the paper unpainted since it comes in white & cut that much more off your list.

I had a water stained ceiling and totaly got rid of the stain using clorox. It took a couple of applications to totally get rid of the stain but it worked. I cleared the area, put old vinyl tablecloth on floor to protect and lightly sprayed a clorox and water solution on stain. Closed door to room and opened all of the windows to ventilate. Came back a few hours later to check stain for dryness. If it was mostly dry I lightly sprayed again being careful to not over spray and get everything soggy. I think after the third spraying the stain was totally gone. Of course this can only be done when the weather is warm enough to open the windows for ventilation. I also had a window fan to pull the clorox smell out. I was also careful to use a mask and eye protection. I have used this method on popcorn and drywall.
