My concrete driveway of 41 years is cracking. Is re-doing driveway with pavers a good idea?

Brick and cobble stones were the standard of civilizations for centuries to make roads, so using concrete pavers would be a great look. You will need to prep for the weight of a vehicle and decide if you want to have a solid driveway or a "green" driveway. Green driveways are those who have grass growing in between the solid surfaces. Good luck.

  • Where I live they are a popular upgrade to improve home value and for the very same reason you want to use it - concrete is cracking or crumbling after years of use. I constantly receive flyers and adverts for companies that specialize in this type of work. I love the look and with a bit of research, you can do yourself if you are so inclined and save a bunch of money.

A lot also depends on the style of your home modern paver on a country home looks odd. If you hire out or do yourself make sure you research how it should be done people cut corners to save money which later leads to shifting or worse weeds cause shifting. So arm yourself with as much knowledge first. If you have had a concrete driveway and it's looking bad after 41 years concrete works great your area I would stick with it and have it stained to match any stonework or brickwork home has,or have concrete pressed to simulate paved look. Concrete has less seams and will keep weeds at bay.

Hi Dratner. A paved driveway is very beautiful. I think it is a great idea. Make sure it is laid the correct way so it lasts.

Pavers always look nice for the first few years and then they tend to sink due to weight and moisture and ants digging in the sand. It might be cheaper and easier to put another layer of concrete over the top of the present pad.

We live in Daytona Beach, so snow is not a problem.

    Thanks.

I helped putting in a whole parking lot of pavers, turned out beautiful. It is very expensive and very hard work. Have you considered having concrete stamped? I had this done on mine, I think it looks just as beautiful.
