I primed and painted my concrete back porch and noticed it is peeling.

I had a green concrete porch floor in the back and wanted to repaint it. I used a primer someone told me to do first and then painted it a brick color. I also put on a sealer but after 3 months it was peeling and cracking again. Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures. Any help would be appreciated. Love Hometalk!

Because the original paint should have been stripped. What was the paint used? Concrete paint.Painting outdoor concrete is a process.

I don't know about the primer, but did you use a Concrete Paint? were the sealer and primer concrete products? was the concrete throughly dry before you started each coat. Power wash it to remove peeling paint, then just paint with concrete paint.

I did scrap as much green paint off, used all concrete primer, paint and sealer. Let dry a day in between coats. Will power wash this spring to get everything off and start from scratch. Thanks for the help!

  • Another option would be to stain the concrete. Would you consider that?

    • Give it some thought. Where I live it gets blazing hot in summer - no matter how clean the surface and using the best products, paint peels - the sun is brutal - you can cook an egg on the patio floor. So most people live with concrete as is, cover with indoor/outdoor carpet or rugs, install tile or stain. Beware, stain will fade over time but at least it doesn't peel.

By chance did you pressure wash your porch first before priming it? If you had any dirt on your porch the primer nor paint will stick very well and will crack and peel. I would pressure wash it and let it dry well and then prime and paint

You might also be getting moisture up from the ground through the concrete. If so, the only thing that can be done is to remove the paint.
