I want to paint my kitchen cabinets. What type of paint do you use?

I am currently doing this. I'm using Sherwin Williams Pro Block primer (oil) and ProClassic interior acrylic semi gloss. It is time consuming and clutter everywhere as I am in a condo with no garage. I sand with 100 grit, prime, sand again with 220 grit, prime again, sand with 220 and paint with semi gloss.

Don't know what the purpose of sanding primer is for. It's a sealer and bonding agent for paint. Any quality paint will do. I prefer Behr.

Make sure they are clean and dry. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint with 150 to 220 grit sandpaper. Use a tack cloth or damp rag to remove dust after sanding. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, KILZ,or BIN and have it tinted to the color of the top coat. This will prevent dark or stained surfaces from showing through the top coat. Acrylic, or water-base, paints are low-fume and clean up easily with water. Alkyd, or oil-base, paints require good ventilation because the paint contains solvents that can irritate your lungs and make you feel sick. Alkyd options require mineral spirits for cleanup, but they provide a hard, durable paint finish. Whichever you use, buy the best-quality paint you can afford for a lasting kitchen cabinet finish. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

they may be sanding primer and trying to fill the grain in the wood. Not all wood paints well, usually when a shop is building paint grade cabinets they will use alder, birch, or another tight grain wood. Oak or other hardwood will have a lot of open grain that shows up like a sore thumb when painted. Unless you use a filler first to fill in all that open grain.

Undercoat then either Satin or Gloss Topcoat - no need for anything else on top.

I always use Behr paint. It has been a Best Buy from Consumer reports. As far as painting your kitchen cabinets, the most important thing is the preparation work. Do NOT skimp on that. Watch U-tube videos to get directions and hints.

Instead of painting the cabinets we used stain, We had oak cabinets that we stained to black and it came out beautifully. The stains come with added shellac if preferred so you can eliminate that extra step. We are very happy with the end results. Purchased the stains at Home Depot that has a large assortment of colors in which to choose from depending on your preference. We did two coats since we went from light cabinets to making them dark. Real easy to do with an old cotton tee shirt to apply the stain. Just another option for you instead of painting.

Glidden high-gloss, easy to clean. Wash with Murphy's oil soap, dry completely. Remove hardware, and paint the doors on a flat surface, and two coats is best.
