They sell eucalyptus based spray at pet store for furniture. And it does work. Just do not spray the cat with it.

Take the cat to a groomer and have their nails cut every five to six weeks. My son's cat never ruins furniture and she is an 8 year old indoor cat (that doesn't like other animals except our one small dog). She gets transported in a small pet carrier bag which she dives into once her nails are trimmed.
Hello Pat! My daughter has two cats that are indoor cats who have learned not to scratch her leather furniture. First, my daughter provides her two cats with a scratching post and second, if they go where they should not go, she uses a small spray bottle of water and gives them a little spritz in the face. This is a gentle way to stop them from doing what they’re not supposed to do — and it works beautifully .
They need a scratching post! Especially if indoor cats. I have 6 rescue cats (indoor/outdoor) and none scratch the furniture - I have the cardboard scratchers all over the house as well as a post. I left a 4' stump from a tree that died, it is their favorite place. And I spent time training them.

a spray bottle works wonders on training a cat, and its harmless. I have always used one filled with 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar. Works like a charm. They do not like the vinegar scent/taste, and dont want it on their fur. It has worked to keep them off counters, no furniture scratching, to come in from outside when called, and from chewing indoor plants as well. good luck.
