prune late winter before the flower buds form. New growth will grow at the cut in early spring.
I was told by a gardner that once the sap stops flowing you can trim plants/trees. And, that's happens in late fall or winter. Hope this helps. And stay warm!

In the winter the sap has returned to the trunk of the tree to protect the tree itself. Pruning the tree in the winter puts less stress on the tree.
