What kind of padding do I need to put in a table runner so that it will protect the table from Heat?

Go to your local Joannes fabrics. There is a special heat resistant batting you can buy. I usually double the thickness for extra safety. you can also make pot holders with the batting.
I just read a few articles about making table runners and there were 2 battings recommended. One is called Soft & Bright and the other is called Warm & Natural. However, I'm thinking that if you want to use the runner on your table with hot food on top of the runner, it might be better to just use either hot pads or trivets. Also the runner won't protect your table if people drop hot food or spill something on your table. I have fitted pads to protect the entire table that we use when we use that table. I use a colorful tablecloth over that and top it with a lace tablecloth too. Then if I want to use a runner for decoration, I don't have to worry about hot food ruining the surface. As a matter of fact, I STILL use hot pads for really hot food if I put it on the table. The table I have is quite old. It was actually left for us by the previous owner about 45 years ago. I have no idea how long the previous owner had the table, but the chairs didn't hold up as well. We're on our third set of chairs, but the table is in perfect condition. Wishing you the best.

Depending on what size you want to make the runner, you can purchase silicone mats, and insert them in between the two layers of fabric (top and bottom) of the runner. Top stitching perpendicular to the long sides of the runner should hold the mats in place. These mats are sold under different names - sometimes silicone baking mats, baking sheets, etc. but all have the same function- to resist heat.
