You have to take cuttings of them, plant in potting soil and keep indoors for the winter....my uncle has had success with pulling the whole plant out of the garden, removing the soil from the roots and hanging upside down from the basement rafters over the winter, he then repots the plant in late spring, watering etc to put outside after last frost

I pull mine out of the ground before freeze and put in brown paper sack from grocery store. Staple top shut and place some place where they won’t freeze. Plant in early spring

Yes, I cut mine back several times through out the winter because it get's "leggy". They really don't like a lot of water so don't over do it. I usually don't get a bloom until the spring, bring it outdoors again after the frost is over and cut that baby back again. It will bloom again through out the summer than you can start all over again in the late fall.
