Painting wood paneling isn't hard if you take the time. I painted dark paneling a nice light cream color. First I cleaned it really well and then I filled the ridges and nail holes with spackle, sanding it smooth. I lightly sanded the entire area to rough it up slightly. Then I used Kilz primer to seal it. After that, it was a simple matter of painting it the color I wanted. You can also gett the primer tinted. Light and bright and looked totally different. An alternative is lining paper, which is applied like wall paper and can be painted or wall papered over.

It's absolutely not silly and also not hard to do. I just painted wood floors that couldn't be redone with sanding, plus a sub floor that I didn't have the money to put new flooring on after ripping up the old carpet. I think any floor can be painted, as long as you use a good paint and seal if you're going to keep it for awhile. I used floor paint for my projects. I wanted to go bold with color, but, chickened out. I did go for a slate gray that I love. Here's a project someone else did with instructions follow her blog, so it's worth the time to go there, too:

We painted our old wood panel. First use caulking to fill any cracks, then apply aroma free Kilz primer paint. Then paint however you like! Kilz is wonderful primer!
