What's the best paint to use to cover up black soot from unvented heat

think you meant soot and heater. All heaters and fireplaces need high heat paint which can be purchased at home improvement stores. There are other sources online in a wider range of colors. Just do your best to clean soot off first so paint has surface to grip.

Hi Carolyn! I did this years ago when our old furnace died with a puff of smoke which left soot all over the bottoms of my walls; thoroughly clean the walls. When they're dry, primer them & paint with latex paint. Worked like a charm!

Zinsser B.I.N Primer is fantastic at blocking out stains caused by soot and fire damage. This product is Meths based so it drys very quickly. When fully dry (45-60 minutes) you can re-coat with ceiling paint or wall paint.

You will have to remove the soot. It has an oily base to it and just covering it with paint won't work. Use a strong solution of TSP and a scrub brush.

After cleaning, use zinner primer sealer before you paint, it will prevent any bleed through from underneath. Have just done this in a workshop where oil from a furnace splattered up the wall.

Tint your primer with grey, your paint department can do this for you, it is good for hiding and won't show through your paint top coat. You can use any paint and color of your choice, most people use latex these days.

I use a black HIGH HEAT paint made by Rust-oleum. It's made for BBQ's, wood stoves and more... Although it's best to clean the soot off more frequently as it's easier to remove. Please, use a HIGH HEAT paint made especially for metal.

Oh my, if it not oily, then just vacuum it with a brush type nozzle, that you can wipe with a rag periodically. We just primed in 14' walls 60' x 60' building and I just brushed it down instead of washing, it is a workshop so not as concerned with the finish, one area was oily the rest was just dirty/dusty. Start with just one room, don't try to do it all at once it will feel too overwhelming. Good luck with your project.
