Should the wooden stairs be coated with epoxy or polyurethane?

the staircase throughout the house had the carpet removed and it was a raw contractor grade staircase. it was painted. to protect the paint, what type of final protective coat should be used?

Short answer is Polyurethane. Generally speaking, polyurethane is better for softer surfaces like wood or paper because it wont crack easily, does not discolor (turn yellowish) and rather durable. Epoxy is better for hard surfaces like concrete in a basement. Personally I always go with polyurethane. Don't forget a respirator or compliant mask as well as ventilation, it matters.
