Painting over floor tiles...

We recently upcycled our kitchen... now we hate the floor tiles even more than before. We can't afford to rip them up and do all new flooring so are looking for ways to paint over them. I know concrete/paving paint works (tried it in the bathroom) but these are higher traffic areas so am wondering if we should go for an epoxy paint, normal concrete paint or one of those uber garage kits with shiny finish.

Love that kitchen! I think that the garage kits are made for concrete only and may not work with the tiles. Im not sure though. I cant wait to see ths kitchen with new floors

Thanks :) I've been talking to companies like Rustoleum who make the kits and they say that as long as you surface prep thoroughly, their garage kit which is supposed to be even better than epoxy will take really well. You have to add the anti slip stuff though because they are classed as extreme gloss.

Any type of epoxy based flooring would definitely hold up and would "pour" over anything! They do make specific tile paints but I can't from my own experience remark on how well they hold up.

I agree with GandmasHouseDIY. Epoxy paint would work the best. Concrete paint or kits aren't made for tile. The tile paints kits are fair. They really don't do wel beyond five or so years.

Thanks all. I'm checking out kits made by Rustoleum which are supposed to be stronger than epoxy. From the bit of reading i've done .. as long as you sand back your tiles to remove any shine, then prime you can use concrete and garage floor paints because they're designed for high wear. Only issue that has come up is that some will be come slippery.

Why don't you use luxury vinyl plank flooring? They can be laid over the tiles. Lesslabor intensive and zero down time for the kitchen. Lowes sells a good brand, smart core that is easy to lay, and has lots of pros to it.

Definitely considered it. But apparently because of the gap between our tiles we would have to use some filling agent and ensure that it was perfectly level. Alternatively we had to run an underlay then planks. The end result being removing all the doors to trim them down and replacing skirting boards so the finish is neat.

Check out the smart core planks, you dont have to do all that. I did a Lot of research on vinyl planks and they won hands down
