Stair remodel

Question

Ever since my boyfriend and I bought our first house I've hated the carpet on the stairs! One day I was feeling adventurous and decided to take the carpet off. Well, it's plywood. I need help on options and what we can do with them. I was hoping for real wood to sand and stain, but I'm not sure where to go from here and now I have a project in waiting. Please help!

It may be plywood, but you can paint and distress plywood to work for you! Fill in and sand holes and patch where needed and do something interesting. Paint white or cream risers with black steps and rails, and then paint musical notes or numbers on the risers. Paint words like 'Love, Hope, Faith, Trust, Confidence, Courage, Freedom, Responsibility, etc.' They could be made BEAUTIFUL!

I agree with Jeanette. Cheap & easy fix. You have a blank canvas to work with. You can have floor paint mixed to any color to suit your taste and décor. I would choose a darker color for the rise and a lighter color for the steps to hide scuff marks. Good Luck!!!

You can also buy stair treads in many colors and materials. We used scrap Pergo for the risers and vinyl treads. We have a walk-out ranch and large dogs who need good traction on the stairs. (Actually I do too!) We tried bare wood, vinyl tile, and carpet. All were pretty slippery.

Ply wood can be stained . It is used for kitchen cabinets. To lessen the noise walking up and down the stairs you can put just trends of carpet.

Yes painting the treads and risers is the quick and easy solution. But, we've found that using hardwood stair treads designed for retrofitting existing stairs are also an economic solution to ripping out and starting over, and is a process most home owners can handle.

For a professional appearance after all is done, replace the plywood with stair tread. This will give you a finished front edge and allow you to stain or paint to any color desirable.  The treads are only nailed down. Just pop them up. Be a little daring.  Try one first. The end result will be worth it. For a great fit, remember to measure the rear and the front of each tread before cutting, as each tread may vary slightly in length and shape. ( No house is perfectly square )!  Hope this helps.

I just did this a month ago.I sanded, patched holes and cracks with joint compound,sanded again, primed twice and painted 2 coats of black floor paint (risers only) treads way too $. Carpeted treads only. So soft and quiet love it!

I agree with Terry's Flooring. This does not look like plywood. I wouldn't think it would have a bullnose if it were. If I were you and didn't like the look of the wood I would paint them. Be careful what color you pick to paint them though. You need to find a color that won't look dirty all the time. Good luck!

If not real plywood it could be partical board or OSB board. Not stainable or really sandable.  But can be painted.  Prime first. Paint.  Then a really good poly coat

if the wood underneath is in good shape you can paint it. Even do some nice designs. We put cork flooring on our stairs. I stained and varnished them and they look great.
