Most everyone tends to hang things that don't need to be hung in a closet. I would get an under the bed box for those things like blue jeans and other pants that can be folded. T-shirts don't need to be hung up unless they are dress ones. There should be other things in the closet that don't need to be hung up in a closet. Make sure anything that you don't wear this time of year is taken out. If you are not wearing it at all, it could be stored for now.

Very true, tho the changing of climates at this point makes this very tough to select from. Thanks for your feedback. Judy.

Hi Judy, Think vertical. Put another shelf above the standard shelf. Store seasonal items. Use hooks, if possible.

I always add a second rod to my client's packed closets, move the shelf up and the first rod, and then install a second rod far enough up from the floor to hang pants and skirts without hitting floor. Use the top shelf with plastic crates to store out of season clothes. Install a shelf over the second rod and you can put shoes on it. Put more shoes in plastic boxes on floor. Add a couple hooks on the sides, for belts, scarves etc.

Add rolling drawers under the bed repurposing old dresser drawers with the addition of mini rollers on the bottom, and a canvas cover on top, and handle under the bed edge to pull out.

Judy, I buy a lot of pants and tops online on sale. I try to keep a status quo. If anything new goes into my closet, something old must leave. You may have to do One Big Cleanout first, donating everything you can to a friend or charity. Thin blouses can take up as much space as wool pants. If they don’t fit, get rid of them. Then maintain the number of items or try to keep even less. ☺️

Great ideas. With the weight loss, it is tough to choose from, in case some weight is gained back, when adjusting to new weight. I have lost 95 lbs., and so the larger clothes, I can get rid of, or give to others, It is the lower size, that I am leary to get rid of, in case of a lb or two of gained weight . . thanks so much, J.

I have a rule for every new item and old item must be donated. Plus check out all of your clothing and ask yourself if it still fits, is it outdated or does it need repair. Easier to thin a closet out as compared to building shelves or buying a closet organizer.

Judy, I certainly understand. I’ve got to lose 100 pounds to protect my kidneys. But I keep buying my huge size because I want to wear new clothes now. But when I start losing weight, I don’t really believe it will last. It’s wonderful you have lost weight now, but I understand the insecurity that would allow you to turn loose of your larger clothes. I’ll give a suggestion that you can use or ignore: Keep two pairs of pants, blouses, skirts, dresses, in the next size up. Get rid of all the others, along with scarves or anything else that identified you at the larger sizes. Do what your body needs to maintain your weight loss and to lose more. And celebrate your new size with new (or used) clothes and accessories.

    Congratulations!
