I have painted laminated furniture in the past. First paint with Kilz primer. Then choose a chalk paint or a DIY chalk paint in your favorite color. To fix the chip, I would use wood filler and sand it smooth, it will not be noticeable if you are painting the piece afterward. Have fun get creative.

Put some wood putty in the chipped area. Wait for it to dry and then sand it. Then you can paint it.

Yes by all means use the wood filler but I went a step further and added a little paint to the filler. When it was dried I sanded it with 400 very fine sandpaper..I kept passing my fingers over spot I wanted it as smooth as a bays bottom. If you take off too much of filler dont be afraid to go back in to fill dimple. Its not a big deal. Make sure you wipe of spot where you sanded.otherwise will show . use small quality brush for detail but a small roller will do the trick. Paint it then stand back and admire your work.

I have had really good adhesion using Rustoleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover. Home Depot sells it and it is CHEAP. $8.00 a can. I could not believe how well it stuck to some old hardwood flooring without primer. I did hand sand the finish with 120 grit to give the pieces finish some "tooth" for the paint to stick to. (I was using them for a coffee table top.) I could run my fingernail across it hard an it wouldn't budge. The paint on the trial piece that I did not sand came off eaily. However, I was putting stuff away a couple of weeks later and it had actually gained pretty good adhesion in that time. Not good enough for me, but surprisingly good considering it had no sanding or primer. There are 2 schools of thought as to sand or not to sand laminate furniture. I don't know what to tell you there. The good thing about the Rustoleum is that for 8 bucks you can experiment to see if it sticks with sanding or without and figure out if you are even going to like the finish. You cannot use a foam roller, because it will leave bubbles. You would need a good quality paint brush. I did use a foam brush (because I am cheap), but needed more coats. It self levels nicely and has the properties of oil pint without the stink and is water clean up. The finish is hard and durable. If you do try this paint, be aware that some colors look odd when you open the can and the paint is not stirred. Khona Brown will look purple (and when painted over white primer will never truly leave it's purple all the way behind) and Black will look blue and I imagine would not loose all of the blue if painted over white primer. I just have personal experience with the Kohna brown. It only looked it's true color without white primer. Espresso is an awesome color if want to go with a brown. Hope your project works out.

If you have a chip out put wood putty in the chip workit in fill the chip

When painting a laminated piece, make sure to rough up the surface so the paint will adhere better. Also, for the chip, depending how big /deep is the surface I would do the following: For a deep chip, build the wood putty in stages - letting it completely dry in between. If you wood putty all at once it may not hold very well. if it is not so deep, you could go ahead and fill it. Also, make sure to use a good primer so you won't have any bleed through. I used a homemade chalk paint which covered the piece beautifully. I hope that helps.

Hi Kelly, laminate is pretty easy to paint if you prep it well before the time. Probably the most important thing is to sand it so the paint has something to grip onto and wipe it down well afterwards to get rid of any sanding dust. You can also use good deglosser and a primer like Zinsser 123, the the paint of your choice. Sponge rollers work best so there's no brush marks. For small tight corners you can use a brush. Make sure to let the paint dry completely between coats and let the piece "cure" well before adding items, otherwise they may "stick" and lift the paint when removed.
