Here's how I gave this walnut desk a new life!
This wood color of this desk faded from sun. I sanded off the existing finish with an orbital sander using the following sanding schedule. 80 grit, followed by 120 grit and 180 grit.

Then I hand sanded in the direction of the wood grain with 220 grit sand paper. No higher grit sand paper is recommended because it will close up the wood grain that makes it so beautiful for wood stain.
I then Wiped the sanding dust with a Tac cloth and applied a wood conditioner of 50-50 denatured alcohol and shellac with scrap upholstery foam. You can also use mineral spirits to prep the wood for stain.
This picture is after General Finishes Walnut Gel Stain was applied using scrap upholstery foam and moving in the direction of the grain. Then excess stain is removed with lint free blue shop paper towel to reveal the wood grain. The wood is then protected with General Finishes Gel Top Coat also applied with scrap upholstery foam.
Finished project!
