Consult a tree farm in your area. They’ll know what grows well.

Hello. A red or silver maple would grow well.

I would also recommend going to a good garden center that grows its own trees. They would be able to recommend one or more that is not on the ever growing list of trees with problems that are cropping up now. I don't know where in Minnesota you live, but I know that Rochester is removing an awful lot of trees now that are in the path of all the diseases and bugs that are cropping up. I am just waiting for the city to take out the elm on the Blvd. Our canopy on our street is disappearing more each year. We have a huge (almost five feet across) maple in our front yard, and a large birch in the back that have withstood the elements for who knows how many years. Check out what neighbors have that are healthy and strong and start from there. Make sure you get instructions on how to care for the young trees that you get so that they will end up as healthy mature trees.

I'm in northern MN and what grows best in my yard are the big old oaks and Red pines. I have a silver maple in my backyard that is absolutely beautiful but I find the maples and oaks take the longest to grow.

Call or go online to your State university extension offices. In Indiana we have Purdue Extension and they have all types of information about horticulture. They also have Master Gardener classes to take to learn about this stuff. I think all states have these classes. We have the classes in many of our counties. Well worth the time and the money.
