Woodgraining is a lot easier than it looks. We have been remodeling our basement and having a bit of fun. We had an old beam made of 6 6x2 lumber pieces that had been painted turquois. We thought of several different ways we could hide the eyesore, but then I found a tool for woodgraining and went to town!
The basics. Pick your undercoat colors. I used 3 for this example. I usually incorporate some green or medium gray as well, but not this time. Base coat your board with the lightest. Let it dry.
Streak on your next color sporadically.
Before the second coat is dry, add the third color and kind of blend them around. Let it dry when you are finished adding colors.
Using a dark Decorating Glaze paint over the top of your dried base.
While the glaze is still wet use a woodgraining tool (found at your major hardware store) and pull it across the board while rocking it from front edge to back. You will make several passes next to each other. The wonderful thing about glaze is that if you don't like the look you have created simply spread it out again and retry it until you have a pattern you are satisfied with. Let the glaze dry, you do not have to seal it.
This is our finished beam. Yes, I was able to do this over my head, that's how user friendly the glaze is! It is unsealed. The photos below show the same technique used on our bar. We coated it with about 4 layers of polycrylic to give it that high gloss and tough surface.
The top of the bar is just a piece of plywood that we sanded and then we used this process.
