It is really hard to find a nice set now a days, they are made so cheaply now. I'd leave them as is.

These are about 25 years old ....they do need a spruce up I haven't touched them in 13 years since they were given to me :)

I took a class on painting plaster figures and we would paint the entire figure flat black, then go back and do a dry brush method with the colors we wanted. Don't have to be an artist to do this either and it gives it a realistic look. You can get as detailed as you like with the method. Find a deer picture you like and use it for a guide. We used water based craft paints and when it's finished spray with a clear matte finish polyurethane for protective coating. This works well with things that a textured. Don't worry about getting the black to smooth, the brush strokes add to the finished look. If strokes go up and down, dry brush across the strokes, not in the same direction as the black strokes.

I would think you would be able to find some good spray paint that would be water proof at home depot or lowes that would fit your needs and preserve the deer for a long time to come!

I painted mine with an oil based enamel paint a few years ago & they have really held up well.Didn't get fancy ...just painted them a brown color.

I would stain them with a deer color make it oil based, or douse them in light oil, like motor oil, and rubb it in, then stain...and spray a lacquer over after

I would leave them for sure they are beautiful! are the concrete ones ever realistic? really. The greying and moss makes them very charming...no one has any ones like this probably anywhere. DONT Change them....

I think it would look beautiful painted with an Oil Rubbed Bronze color --- that would make it look like an expensive piece of statuary !!

For a realistic look you would need to blend several colors, will you spray paint? I generally paint with my art brushes, So you can achieve this with spray paint but you would need a really good spray gun for art ,Brush techniques you can layer several colors, mixture of burnt umber and white makes a gray tone /yellow or yellow ochre and burnt sienna make s a great neutral tone. White of course for the tail and chest and nose. With an old pastry brush which you wont use again is great for feathering fur look. Mix your browns with burnt sienna to get the right tone / you can add yellow ochre to lighten some of the fur tone for sunlight hitting the deer, sound like too much ? I hope maybe one or two of these ideas will work for you. here is a link hope that you may be able to get something from it http://youtu.be/g8AkAewiCd4
