The Easiest Way to Update Your Ceiling Fan

When I was updating our master bedroom, I wanted to update our ugly, outdated ceiling fan. The fan was still super functional so cosmetic updates were all that were needed. For me, the most eye-twitchy part of most ceiling fans are the awful light covers, but I'm not a fan of a lot of the replacement ones that are widely available at most home improvement stores. Here's how I found some that I like for less money.
Sorry for the terrible picture quality (why I didn't think to take this pic while the fan was turned off...) but you can see the outdated light covers and the fake oak fan blades. Also, you can tell that the ceilings in this room are really high. I definitely didn't want to have to do anything that would involve removing the fan from those 12 foot ceilings. Nuh-uh.
Here is the "after" picture! The biggest change was switching out the light covers. The trick here is, these aren't actually ceiling fan light covers (which are actually called "fitter shades" in the lighting departments of home improvement stores). These are the vanity shades that are in the bathroom lighting section, and they're sold to fit on bathroom light fixtures- not on ceiling fans!
There is a much larger selection of these light covers, in a more modern style, than in the ceiling fan lighting section, plus they're one-half to one-third of the cost of many traditional ceiling fan fitter shades!
I darkened this pic so you can see the difference in style. I love the more modern touch of these light covers, and I really love how they pop against the dark gray ceiling!
If you want to try this, I'd advise buying just one and trying it on your fan for a couple of weeks like we did to ensure you can get a secure fit (if you look closely at the "before" pic, you can see that we were in the process of doing just that).
We've had these in place for several months now with no issues and are super pleased with the result!
