Is this brick, or glazed tile? Natural brick is not recommended for shower walls due to its porosity.

Were the walls of this shower ever sealed properly to begin with?

Am I correct in presuming you wish to put up something to hang towels and washcloths from? Ask the people who installed the brick if they have an recommendations; ask other people in the area who do such installations; someone may have a solution; the pressure rod idea might or might not work...sionce your shower area looks rather longl=; I don't think a pressure rod will stand up to muc use, evena alrge, heavy duty one, before starting ot sag int he middle; and you would have to seal the dickens out of it, and the wire baskets, to keep them from rusting...my thought was maybe a nice aluminum or brass towel bar with decorative ends, nice aluminum or brass chain, and aluminum or brass raings to slide the towel bar into; suspended from the ceiling, at a height to hold the towel rod, of thats what you are looking to put in? iN hte brass, Iw ould look for something treated to withstand the elements outside; unless you like the verdigris look; and saying that, you could aslo achieve the same think with untreated copper...
