Use bigger pots, I put mine in ten to twelve inch pots and get great results with huge plants. I use potting soil with peat moss mixed in and an extended release good fertilizer. You have to make sure with the size pots that it is big enough for a mature plant, that is why the bigger the better for good root growth. My herbs got good morning sun and a few hours of afternoon sun and they did great last year, so all day sun is not a necessity, but make sure they do get some good hours of sun a day. Fertilize according to the directions and make sure they get enough water during hot days. Sometimes I would water every day when it was hot and sunny, but don't overwater. Good luck with your herbs! With the larger pots you can take them inside if you have a grow light for the winter, that way you can enjoy fresh herbs year round. Don't take too much while the plants are real young, a nip here and there occasionally will make it branch out more, but taking too much, too frequently could stress it out too much.
