DIY: Paint The Fireplace With Chalk Paint

Transform the look of your fireplace with a little paint. Yes, a little paint goes a long way. This project can be completed within a few hours and enhances the look of your mantel and fireplace. It's super simple too. See how chalk paint was used to do this easy afternoon project.

Prep for painting by cleaning the entire surface. There should be no dust or dirt lingering around the surface.

If you'd like, add painting tape around areas that you don't want to get paint on them - surrounding walls, trim, baseboards, etc. Since I was using chalk paint I did not strip, prime, or do anything to the wood before I painted. I simply cleaned it and got ready to paint. You could re-create the look with other paint but may need to prime/prep the surface differently.

Next, I painted the fireplace with Graphite Chalk Paint®. Because it was a dark color it absorbed the color very well and only 2 coats were needed.

Keep a wet rag for any touchup paint that needs to be removed from nearby surfaces (baseboards, trim, floor, etc.).

Next, I distressed the entire fireplace with a sanding block. I wanted an "aged look so that's why I added in this step.

Distress as much as you'd like or not all. This will affect the look that you'll end up with.. It revealed this ashy, gray color, that showed the off-white color underneath. Perfect finish for my style!

I might have a crush on this painted fireplace and that says a lot for me. I can be hard to please with my on projects, always striving for perfection. It has that super-soft, chalk-y, finish that I love when I paint using ASCP too. It’s a butter-soft feeling that you’ll never forget.
