What to plant in my cedar log planter?

I hollowed out a 2ft cedar log & made a planter [believe you me thats one job I won't tackle again anytime soon... but it turned out great, so all my hard work paid off!!] Now... Any suggestions on what would be pretty to plant in it ? [When I decide & get them planted, I'll post pics!]

I just saw one done (I am thinking it was here on Hometalk). They planted a variety of leafy and flowery, alternately...your choice, actually in what colors you want.

I'd go with anything native to your area.... bulbs for spring, perrienals and maybe a pop of your favorite annuals for color...local nurseries or plants sales are fantastic this time of year..

When I have undertaken these difficult projects for customers I always first make sure I have apply preventive Termite solution/ spray to be on the save side. Sometimes the best log planters are those found naturally laying around the ground after this long winter. What you plant in your log planter depends on numerous factors. One as Douglas has asked sun or shade? Shallow roots, or need for proper drainage ? I have found vines of any kind are terrific in this kind of planter. Do you want perennials or annuals is it for inside or outside? Just be careful not to plant huge spreaders like coleus.

practically anything you want to plant...i had start of a leafy vine with blue bellshaped flowers that multiply fast ,growing in a tree stump..hardly any soil there ..it is beautiful..as more you cut it back in the fall,the more it grows back in the spring and will bloom long into summer...happy planting Douglas...( i am not sure of the vine's name,but i think its a Vinca)

You could do a mix of gazanias or gaillardias and nasturtiums.
