Most seeds you get from produce today will not germinate. When the push began to produce seedless or near seedless produce, the "genetic engineering" rendered our food "sterile!" (non reproducing)

While I have not personally tried to save seed in what is known as "HERITAGE" vegetables, I understand their seeds can be saved and will germinate. I have no experience as to how well they produce, but it is worth trying them out.

P.S. In your garden, set aside a few plants that you wish to use as seed plants. For example, peas and beans have to dry on the vine to be viable for planting. The shells actually turn brown and become brittle, the peas/beans are hard.
