How can I upgrade this half wall?

I think so shiplap or beadboard would look great there!

I'd go with old barn siding. Or the bead board painted with milk paint.

I am in an apartment and could not do anything permanent. I had some beautiful wrapping paper and just tacked it on the wall. It looks beautiful and didn't cost anything.

When I was a kid my parents bought fun wall paper for one side and painted the other. I would add open bookshelves above the wall with iron plumbers pipe and pine boards to make better use of the empty space, but still keep the airy feel.

The show is a bit glam for my style, but I recently saw what they did with one of these walls and I loved it. It was only Flip or Flop Vegas. I think it was the following episode which is being shown again soon.

Pallet wood in a chevron or herring bone pattern to make it interesting... or... use as the backing for a bookcase built to hold bins of the kids toys, etc. drawers from an old dresser could be adapted to fit.. or make custom if you want them to fit without seeing the contents. Widen the top to make a place for doing home work or crafts or as place for setting drinks snack, etc.(saw the cup sitting there)... storage stools or ottomans underneath for the kids to sit on.

Paint it with chalkboard paint!

a friend built a shadow box display unit for our wall. He measured, went home and built it and slid it into place. we have books, figurines and photos on the shelves.

Do you want to raise this half wall to the ceiling? It appears the theme of the living room is child friendly including toys. It would be difficult to do rustic country on just the half wall but you could face it in barn board. Maybe you could add a beam over the half wall (on the ceiling) and hang baskets from that. This would give you toy storage and add to the country theme.

Hello, I guess it depends on your budget and your overall style not just based on trends. If you have always loved rustic style that's one thing, if it's just cause everyone is doing shiplap and chalk paint that's another. So budget,if it would allow you to take wall all the way up I would clothes that area up so that you can use it as you can see right now it serves no purpose. If you took it up and had 2 bookcases installed with an opening in the center for you TV that wall right now could house the twos plus books and knick knacks. Later on since your children will grow up you can still use it for just books or movies or decorative items. As for making it look rustic you could leave the wood used just stained to show beautiful grains and knots. You could add a barn door to cover the TV area and you can't get more rustic than a barn door. On the door you could hang art work or a big clock. That way that becomes a feature wall but will grow with the kids you can benefit from it as well and incorporate your personal style using the items you already have to show your love of the rustic look. If you don't want a TV in the center then Ave a built in bench or reading nook for you and/or the kids but make sure that it opens to hide all the toys and for the other toys put them on the shelves in woven baskets. But as it is now I think and it's just my opinion based on one photo, that it would look weird to just have that less that half wall covered in something unless you carry it throughout your home or at least I that room. I have been in those style of homes and generally that's the living room with the dining room eat in kitchen area more or less open to eat so you could carry it over into that area if your home is open.

take the sheet rock off and make a book shelf inside the wall.

I like that the wall provides some privacy for your living area when the door is open, so I'd go with something to enhance it, as opposed to removing it or opening it up. You could mirror it to make that area look larger, maybe glue on some vertical trim strips to make it look like it was an open staircase with railings.

Remove the half wall and replace it with railing.

Build shelves to cover the entire half wall and hit up IKEA for pretty baskets to put in each cubby. All the kids toys go in the baskets.

Put a small bookshelf on one side and paint the other with chalkboard paint. They will have a storage unit for toys and a chalkboard for fun

put a wide piece of wood or laminate across it to make a desk top and put some bar stools there and then use underneath for storage. Now you have an ”art” or work area and storage.
