I would chisel off those funky shelf with the lamp on it, and use the two lower ones to support a beam, using drilled in threaded bolts or a French cleat.
I agree with painting the stone, I painted my sister’s stone fireplace with a white chalk paint, then sealed it, and it turned out great, she loves it. Very little prep with chalk paint, just vacuum it off good to remove dust. Then I would put in an electric fireplace insert. Amazon sells them for very reasonable price.
Candles or throw pillows in the accent color used in the rest of the home would add some interest. You could white wash the stone to lighten the wall. Add some shelves and use items to bring color in. Needs some sort of color to break up the monotone that is going on.
Ok, as always, I am the odd one out. I think it is a beautiful wall, all it needs is some updating. I would swap out the heater for a pretty electric fireplace, add a mantle and get help styling it with items you probably already own.
If you really do not like it, get a stonemason to remove, and install drywall and paint.

You could do something similar to what we did in our basement. We built 2x2 frames in front of our concrete foundation and then added paneling (see my post) or you could use 2x4's and sheetrock it (more work and $$). I really agree with Naomie above though. If it were cleaned up it really isn't bad, just needs a little tlc. The saws are neat, but don't belong there.
I would build two white bookshelves one each side for extra storage and to make the wall look smaller if u can't afford to replace the heater I would change the paint color using appliance paint to black and then add a nice mantel and large painting or mirror on top to make the room look bigger and hide more of the stone wall
A lesser expensive & less involved solution is a pretty fireplace screen to set in front of it. This would help to disguise it & yet leave it fully functional for those cold winter nights when the heat is needed.
You could also build & install a nice mantle over it under the saws to put other smaller coordinating decor pieces on.
Hope this gives you some good ideas how to use & leave you heater as it is but be attractive as a fireplace substitute.

I would take all the stuff off it for starters, are those old one-man saws? Then I would paint the ceiling.

Talk to a stonemason and see if he would take the stones in trade for a discount on a wall renovation. Some people love that type of stone.
