Can I use Cellophane on a fluorescent light fixture?

Has anyone ever used colored Cellophane on a fluorescent light fixture? We cut cellophane and taped it on the inside against the box panel cover. The effect is awesome, but I am wondering if there is a fire hazard there? The lights don't put off heat really and the cellophane sits about 8 inches away from the actual tube/bulb. I just wondered if anyone had ever tried this?

I would definitely worry about a fire hazard. Maybe if you applied it on the outside over the glass it could work

I have never tried this but having installed 2 of my own fluorescent kitchen light systems and I think you are fine especially since the cellophane is not directly on the bulb, and there is sufficient space between the electrical components and the cellophane. This would be compared to placing a light diffusing panel intended for the fluorescent light
you are fine if you are just covering a solid panel with a color, if it is a grate like panel, I would leave an inch at both ends for some air flow just to be safe.

As long as you don't hve the light on long enouth to melt the cellophane it should be ok, but better to maybe use glass paint and colour the tube or the inside of the cover!
