With the Rainy Day Challenge approaching, I took advantage of a rainy Monday to come up with a Valentine‘s Day idea from materials I had. I still had about 1/4 yd ticking left from a previous challenge but what could I make? I had a pile of hangers nearby that I was returning to the dry cleaners and up popped an idea! I love when that happens!! So I grabbed a hanger and the ticking and got to work.
These white hangers are easy to bend.
So I took the hangar and bent it into the shape of a heart, keeping the hook of the hanger at the top so it can be hung from it. If you have dry cleaning hangers these are pretty flimsy, ideal for bending. I then took the fabric and with scissors made one inch cuts all along the bottom using the stripes as my indicators! Then I ripped these strips all the way to the end.
Rip your fabric.
I continued ripping fabric. I planned on making 8 inch strips. With the fabric length I had I was able to get 2 strips from each rip. After ripping those got folded and cut into the 8 inch strips. Now taking each strip and removing the stray thread fold in half making a loop, placing the loop on top of the wire of the hanger. Bring the two ends up and in back coming through the loop to the front. This is called a larkshead knot. They actually look like little ties when done this way!
Larkshead knots
Continue making these placing side by side and pushing tight together. This is how many I was able to do in 5 minutes!
5 min of knotting!
When you’re all done, now you need to finish the actual hook of the hanger so I used Washi tape
Finished with the knots
After taping around the hanging part of the hanger I decided to add one last detail. An arrow! Getting out two narrow posts, duct tape, red felt with bonding and a gift tag and more washi tape, I went to work making an arrow
Ingredients of an arrow!
First I duct taped the rods together then covered the whole piece with washi tape. Then taking the felt, cut a piece for the end and with scissors cut “feathers”. I also cut small slits for the rods to go into. Then for the heart shaped gift tag, I simply duct taped it to the end of the arrow keeping the tie attached for a little bit of cuteness! I laid the arrow under on the left and over on the right and with 2 small gold wires attached them to the wire hanger between two knots.
Attach with wire
Now I simply hung it from its hanger to enjoy.
