When to plant Day Lilies in Iowa

Husband decided to turn our failed hosta garden into a day lily garden. But do we plant in Spring or Fall? (The area we planned obviously got too much sun.)

You can plant the day lilies in the spring. I do suggest you wait a little longer until the frost is for sure done. I live south of Chicago and snow expected next week, 75 for Saturday.

I live in Ky and the rule of thumb here is you plant flowers after derby day which is always the first Sat. in May, but I plant perennials in April especially daylilies, they are so tough, just keep them watered good. I have never lost one even with a late freeze or snow. Good luck.

Thank you!! We usually wait until May 15. But day lilies will make it planted in Spring! OK!

I live in Ohio and have transplanted, replanted and/or planted many times in the spring and fall with no issues..

You can plant daylilies in spring as soon as you can work the ground and find them for sale. There is no need to wait until after all danger of frost has past with perennials.

@Douglas Hunt Thank you! I didn't realize that about perennials, but it makes sense!

I plant day lilies anytime during the growing season. Just make sure to keep them watered during hot spells.

@ And being in Iowa we have hot spells, but being from Kansas, I'm not telling you anything you don't know!

Like my Mom used to say..."anytime your shovel is sharp"...I add to that, "and any time you do not risk frostbite!" HA! I have never failed to have them survive and thrive!
