What is the best paint to cover walls after cigarette smoke?

We have found that covering the walls is one thing but the smell is the hardest to get out....my daughter used lots of kiltz before painting and then still has smell at times..this is no help but experience only...maybe someone else will answer and know a miracle. Just letting you know it is tough..good luck lady

Quality of the paint is not at issue. The very best paint there is will not stick to a greasy wall. Clean well, do proper surface preparation and choose a medium quality paint. You will have a better finished job than if you paint with a $50 gallon of paint that does not adhere.

HI Diana. You can buy a wall cleaner called TSP. I would wash the walls with this first and then use a good primer before you paint.

paint it with Kilz and then a coat paint or two if needed

depending on how long the house has been occupied by smokers it could be as easy as a good scrubbing and Kilz and paint. If it’s been smoker occupied for many years it’s more than the paint covered walls, a smoke abatement company may be your best bet. There are times even drywall has been permeated with smoke and may need replacing to completely remove odors. I’m running into cleaning a home from my parent’s estate that has been theirs since 1960. It’s going to be a big (huge) undertaking to remove almost 60 years of smoke odor.

I really wanted a paint that does not require washing first. With all the technology in the world, and the fact that I worked at a printing ink company that mixed colors: We had to invent many miracles and we did!

I have nerve damage, would be too painful to wash.
