Hallway makeover

I have a very narrow hallway with very imperfect walls. I need a DIY project that is fairly easy and inexpensive. I need to have the feeling of a wider hallway and disguise the irregular walls. Thanks

Painting a lighter color, white or moderate white, will help open up the space. Also hanging a large mirror or several mirrors as wall decor will give the illusion of a bigger space as well. As far as the irregular walls, a picture would help - do you mean the walls have dents/need repair, or are your door borders not lined up evenly?

I also have a narrow and dark hallway that needed help. I have the entire house painted in a light color, my house is small, and light colors open and brighten everything. Then, from floor to ceiling, I hung mirrors, gilt framed mirrors. I had a few, I bought a few at time from discount stores, Craigslist and anyplace else I could find them cheaply, and if the frame was nice, but not gilt, I gilded it. If I had a nice frame, I took it to my local big box and had them cut a mirror for it. Sizes range from 4x5" to about 24" square.

I concentrated on unusual shapes and sizes, and hung them rather tightly spaced , with none of them hung at usual mirror height (that is, no mirror can be used unless you stand on tiptoe, or crouch a little, if that makes sense) In between, where I had spaces I couldn't fill, I gilded wooden letters to spell out words like "LOOK" "BEHOLD" and "SEE" using letters in all different fonts and sizes, but all gilded. The light coming in the windows of the rooms opening off the hall bounces off the mirrors, and bounces back off the mirrors on the opposite wall, and gives the illusion of a much larger space.

Of course, if you don't like gilt, you could use all black frames, or white frames or whatever, just make sure the frames don't become more of a focal point than the mirrors :)

Sounds very unique. You should post a photo. I, for one, would like to see it.

    Agree light color, mirrors.

I agree with above comments. Light colors and mirrors are the best way to make a space seem bigger than it really is. I saw a post last fall where someone made a fake window at the end of her long dark hallway. She used an old window. Put a sheet of film on the back side of the glass. And added a bright light behind it. It really looked like a real window. And it brightened the hallway too.
