Countertops: what is the most durable and least expensive?

My contractor wants to put in granite countertops, but I have read it is porous and chips and has to be resealed. Isn't there something more hardy and maintenance free?

Not entirely. There is a product called Soapstone that countertops are made of that works quite well.
Granite has become industry standard. I am an oddball and not a fan. Here are some links to help you decide.

My personal preference would be corian or quartz. I love formica even though it is considered low end and cheap by many. Think of how hard you and your family are on your countertops. Regardless of selection, I have, without fail, used cutting boards for any food prep. Big ones, small ones, wood, plastic, specific boards for meat and fruits/veggies. I also have a slab of marble for pastry/chocolate.
Take the time to check out each of your options as it is a main component of your kitchen and expensive and you need to be happy for many years to come.

Hi Ann. Quartz counters are the cleanest. These aren't porous and are very durable.

We have granite countertops and we love them. If you scrub and scour or use heavily abrasive cleaners, then you are going to need to reseal the granite. There are many 'recipes' online for easily homemade soft cleaners you can put into a simple spray bottle and it cleans well without stripping off the sealant. So long as the sealant is preserved they are not porous. Chips? I cannot see how unless you are pounding on it or drop your cast iron skillet off of a ladder. Even if they do need resealing, it looks to be a fairly simple process. I hope this helps. We do not regret buying a home with granite countertops and they look great!
