Suggestions to repurpose about 100 sq feet of shingles

We have about 200 square feet of shingles that we are replacing on a roof that isn't quite ready to be reshingled. The old shingles wouldn't do for reuse as shingles, but I hate to dump them in the landfill. Does anyone have suggestions about how to use worn asphalt shingles? I do have a graveled dog run and the dogs have torn up the landscape fabric I put down under the gravel. Do you think the shingles might work as an underlayment? I have an additional 5 foot wide "back walk" behind a building I was thinking about graveling, but haven't done so. Would they work? Any other good repurposing suggestions? Thanks!

The shingles can be used in pathways to prevent weeds from sprouting, but don't use them in a vegetable garden since the "tar" can leach toxic chemicals into the soil, and then get into your vegetables. I wouldn't put them in the dog run either.

Okay....will confine them to that back walk. I live in a desert and rarely have had a successful garden. We are retired, and tend to travel in those months that the garden would need most care, but I don't want to do anything that might damage the soil for future home-owners, either. Thanks for the input!

Beware where you put them. When old roof is torn off the nails come with it. You will likely need the gutters cleaned out also as they will be full of gravel, nails, and bits of shingle.

Thanks. As I go through them, I'm collecting the old nails. I'm thinking I might get a big magnet to drag around in some hard to reach areas to retrieve any I've missed. We don't have gutters on this house, so that's less of a worry. I'd love to install them, though, and maybe we can after we do a full re-roof in 5 years or so, sooner if the hail and wind gets us again.

Whew, that takes me back. Many houses in my home town 50-60 years ago had shingles on the paths and even long driveways. They kept down the weeds and were reasonably safe to walk on in the rain and all year around. ☺️

Hi! I thought I answered earlier, but I don't see it now. Yes, those winds! We've been here for 15 years, and have been fortunate to only have quarter sized hail to date, but that's always one thunderstorm away. It was 70 here today. Something else some don't understand is a spring day in January. We are fortunate! Have a great evening.

We saved out old roofing shingles and used them for a roof on a doghouse, chicken coop and wood shed.

Dog house is a maybe. We don't keep a wood shed, and I haven't had a chicken house since I left home at 18 a LONG time ago. Cheerful memory! Thanks!

if their good enough to keep rain out, I have used many shingles for the roofs of my bird houses. Shingles look great on the bird houses too! You can put on large shingles or cut the shingles in smaller strips to look like a smaller shingle and start with the first strip on the bottom of the roof and then over lap the next strip just as you do on a real roof. When your done looks just like a real roof on a house if you mimic the roofing strips to the smaller size! Must be liked since someone took my last bird house I made! LOL
