I am planning on painting my red brick home. What do I need to do to prepare the brick, also is it better spray the pain on or use a brush. Do I need to pressure wash the brick before painting???

Think a good while. Painting brick, immediately brings down the value of your home. People love red brick, and the fact that there is no maintenance. You are adding a maintenance issue that will need to be addressed every 10 years or so.

I know someone who painted their red brick home, they have regretted painting their brick. Once you paint the brick, you will have more upkeep, because the paint will have to be touched up. Instead, paint your shutters, add window boxes and paint your trim.

i totally agree with Lisa S. Painting your brick house would not be a good idea. Consult a colorist for a new trim color and door color that will give your home that fresh, modern feel I think you are after. Also, have the brick cleaned. Good luck!

I don't think that is true. I see many houses that are being refurbished and the brick outsides are being painted. I think it really makes a house stand out and in most cases, it is a big improvement.

I also have a red brick home. One of the reasons I bought it was low maintenance. I would never paint it as it will always have to be repainted. Now all I have to do to change the look is paint the doors, shutters and trim.

If you really want to do this, remember brick is porus so it will require a whole lot more paint initially to cover. Yes, clean the brick by pressure washing, then spray paint.
