Do you mean the inside of the house is dark? If so, paint color and lighting can do wonders. One of my friends lives in a beautiful craftsman style home with a ton of windows, but she is in a tiny Valley with hills and trees all around, which makes the inside of the house dark all the time, no matter the season. Paint in light bright colors and install or use as much lighting in each room as possible. Furnishings should be light and bright too, darker colors can make things feel closed in. Hope this helps!
Paint using light or bright colors, consider installing sola tubes in dark areas. We put a small sola tube in our bathroom and have had people try to turn the light switch off when leaving the room. A sola tube is sort of like a sky light but reflects light all the way down the tube. If your flooring is dark throw rugs in light shades would help.

The lighter color paint that's used, the lighter the house will seem. Get rid of as much dark items as you can or paint them light tones.
