How do I keep the deer out of the garden ( besides a fence)

We live in the woods and have a large deer population. I have considered using old windows and make some above ground gardens. Can I keep the plants in them for the whole growing season and keep the deer out?

I would think that the deer are content where they are now. I think the closer your garden is to the house, the less likely they are to nibble. Sadly, if deer are hungry enough they eat anything. Maybe you could wrap some plastic fencing around the garden if the deer do become a problem.

I used to live in upstate NY and although I did not have a garden, my neighbor did and she would hang bars of ivory soap in her garden to deter the deer. Worth a try.

My neighbor swears by human hair. Her salon gives her some whenever she needs it. I've watched the deer approach her garden, and they really seem put off by the hair.

Local garden centers have deer repellents. I recommend a granular over a spray. Just follow the directions on the back and it should deter them. There's never a guarantee. When deer are hungry enough, not much will stop them.

I hang pieces of Irish Spring soap around my garden. Deer don't seem to like it, so it seems to work. I make little bags out of old nylon stockings fastened with string & hung on wire fence post stakes.

human urine pour it all around the edge of garden it will work

  • Use a vegetable peeler on the bar of Irish Spring soap and scatter shavings around plants and bushes. There's a product called Bobbex that works really well if you have something you want to protect though!

I read this from Gma Kirk: A farmer gave me a gross recipe for repellent...but it works. cup or two of urine, tablespoons of crushed garlic, and cayenne pepper, two eggs in a gallon jug, shake well, fill rest of the way with water. Cap and let age a week. Then you drizzle small stream around the perimeter of whatever you want to keep them from eating - works on rabbits too!
