How to turn styrofoam beams into faux beans for a ceiling?

Question

Vaulted ceiling calls for a beam down the middle divider.  How to prep for staining?  How to best attach the faux beam to the ceiling?

To make a faux beam, you create a wooden U out of 1x3" or bigger lumber. You age it and stain it before you put it up. You affix a board the width of the opening of the U beam to the ceiling using screws into rafters. Then the U-shaped beam is fastened to the board on the ceiling using a nailer or screws.

Much harder to stain way up in the air.
