someone told me to use soapy water in a spray bottle. they won't survive in it.

  • They are probably fungus gnats that lay there eggs in damp soil. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out and they won't have anywhere to lay their eggs!

You need to put out a bait for them near the plants. Even a fly strip would help. Repot the plants in new soil and clean the pot with ammonia water and rinse with vinegar water. The gnats are using the potting soil as a breeding ground and are attracted to any fungus that may be in the soil. Rinse the roots of the plant gently if possible to make sure no eggs are on them, use tepid water only, you don't want to shock them too bad.

Spray with Simple Green. It will kill the gnats and not harm the plants. Spray the dirt too and all your drains. Hope this helps. You can get it at Walmart in the auto/boat/camping area in concentrate or in spray bottles and concentrate in stores like Menards with the cleansers.

I put systemic insect killer on top of the soil....haven't seen a gnat/white fly since....you can buy the systemic stuff at the hardware store or any garden shop.

I had a terrible gnat problem and the vinegar traps worked perfectly! Simply place a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and a tablespoon of sugar in a bowl and stir. Set your bowl in an area where gnats are prevalent, such as your kitchen or bathroom. This took care of my problem in just a couple of days!
