Go to Walmart and buy a closet organizer. They are plastic coated wire shelving units. All you basically do is install them. The closet organizer will provide double hanging and shelves for extra storage.

Find chest of drawers at used furniture places that are cheap, like Salvation Army, paint them and put them in the closet. They are excellent to store things like small frames, containers with small items, fabric, you name it and if it fits it will stay clean and organized. I keep my most used table linens in one of mine as well as some old picture frames with old pictures from my moms wedding and her parents, etc. (my mom is almost 98) that she couldn't fit into her new apartment when she moved from her huge house.
I have organized my burgeoning sewing supplies in Hefty containers with turquoise lids. They are about 12” w and 12”h by 18” deep. (I am not at home to give you exact measurements.). My husband hung shelves in a clothes closet that were same depth as containers. I have them arranged with the narrow end facing out, side-by-side, with labels made with my label maker that say things such as “summer cottons,” ”piping,” “elastic,” etc. I have containers arranged in alphabetical order, adding to the convenience of finding what I want in record time! Good luck!
P. S. The containers are clear with the turquoise lids.
I bought one of those heavy duty open metal shelves, had the legs cut down at the hardware store so it would fit the height of the closet and installed it myself. I store my fabrics, patterns, finishing materials in those lovely IKEA lidded cardboard storage boxes. They have slots for labels so you can get ridiculously well organized!
I found an old dresser that had several smaller drawers. I painted the dresser and changed out the handles. It now houses most of my supplies. I purchased small clear containers from Menards/Home Depot, they are like plastic tackle boxes that hold my threads, bobbins, pins. They were cheaper than at a sewing center. I also have clear plastic bins that holds my fabric. Instead of printing labels, I typed out the wording on 8x11 inch paper, and placed that inside the front of the bins. You can see through them and if I change the fabric, it's easier to replace the paper. I
