Every time I (Steph) go to a local restaurant here in Tallahassee, I notice the really large canvas artwork they have on the wall and the very simple frame around it. I quickly determined a way to mimic the look with simple materials from the hardware store. Take a look at how it all came together for under $10!

Gather your materials and tools. This project uses readily available materials and simple tools although if you have power tools you can use them to make the project go even faster.
You don't need all these tools. The project can be completed with only the miter box and glue. The clamps and brad nailer makes it a little easier.
The first thing you need to do is lay your wood strips next to the canvas you're framing and mark where the boards need to be cut. Do this for all four sides.
Use a miter box or power saw to cut the wood strips. Sand the edges if they are rough from cutting.
The wood strips can be left natural or can be stained. Let dry before going on to the next step.
Add a bead of glue along the full center length of the board. Put the board in place and clamp or tape into place to dry. The front edge of the board extends beyond the edge of the canvas. The board could also be placed flush with the edge of the canvas if desired.
We decided to brad nail the board into place rather than wait for the glue to dry. If yo don't have a brad nailer, just allow the glue to dry before moving on to the other three sides. All four sides are constructed the same way.
Add hanging hardware to the back of the canvas.
Hang your canvas! This technique is great for kids' art and canvas art of your own creation.
What would you frame with this technique?
I have 3 still life oil paintings on board, and i am going to make them frames. Never done this before so let's see how it turns out. Only thing I'm going to change is the inside of the frame is going to be painted silver and the outer edges in dark stain.
Do you have pictures of how this turned out?
