How to paint a faux leather countertop

I have a very old faux leather vinyl countertop that was popular back in the 1980's. At this point it looks crazy out of date plus it's gold - so popular back then. The problem is that it's a custom built countertop that goes around a corner in all one piece and has a unique angle along the edge where it turns. Therefore replacing it would be very expensive. That unique angle has cabinets underneath so it would have to be part of the design. I've been thinking about painting it but I'm not sure how to cover the texture. I've tried using Google to search for ideas, but apparently either Google doesn't know either or I'm using the wrong search terms. All I get is how to create faux leather. I'd like to paint it so that the faux leather look is gone and the counters end up looking smooth. Does anyone have any ideas other than hide it with concrete? I've included pics showing the texture and the unique corner curve (including the shadow of my phone. LOL). Does anyone have any ideas?

I have a similar countertop. I plan to paint it to look like granite and I think the paint and several coats of sealer will do away with the current texture.

Thanks, Karen. Let me know how it turns out or better yet, take pics and post the process as a project. I'd love to see if your plan works because it's the same as my plan. I'm not in a rush, just researching after thinking about it for a while.

There is a countertop paint kit available on Amazon made by Giani. Reviews have been very positive. Don't know if it would cover the texture but, depending on the finish you choose the texture may enhance the new look.

Thanks Ken, I'm familiar with the Giani products but, like you, I don't know if they will actually cover the texture. My plan is to use a primer, paint then use 4-5 coats of sealer. I've done a faux granite pattern before in white with gray & black and it turned out nice. I know Giani has a kit for that, but I'd prefer to use my own paint. I wish I had a test piece so I could see how it would look. Your thought about enhancing the new look is a good one though. Thank you so much for putting that idea into my head.

Would you consider contact paper? I know there is faux leather contact paper you can purchase

    • Linda Sikut Linda Sikut on Jan 31, 2018

Thanks, Shoshana for the suggestion. I am trying to get rid of the leather look though. :( I'm also concerned that the contact paper will require a much gentler touch than we can give it because we have a Kitchen Aid mixer, a toaster oven and a coffee maker on our countertop that require moving almost every day.

A few coats of a high build primer should eliminate the texture.

Thank you Tracy, I didn't know there was a product like that available. You taught me something new today.

    Linda,

I am currently dealing with this same hideous issue! My bathroom countertop looks like someone had put wrinkles skin over it. This post has been the only one I've seen about trying to get rid out it without replacing the entire thing. Im wondering if you have tackled this issue, and what you might have used or what you think might work.

      Hi Chelsea,

I'm sorry, I didn't see your question. I'm still working on doing this project. However I did receive this answer.

HI Dai, Yes, I've seen the kits, I'm just not sure if they will cover the texture. Thanks, though. :)

I am also in the same boat. (The things people did to Homes in the late 70s and 80s!) I have also googled with no luck. I appreciate this post and I am going to try some of these ideas. I will post pics as soon as I have the projects completed.
