I wanted to have a little pop of color when friends open the door to our powder room. I took down the bar that held hand towels and painted these poppies. Then I took down the mirror and added some faux shiplap and painted it a shade darker than the walls. Mission accomplished.
I took the mirror down and took the lights off. Measured the width of the wall. I used some left over planks from a room project I did and cut them to fit. I used a brad gun to attach them to the wall and I used some paint I already had. I spaced them using a nickel so the gap between boards would be the same. Took two days.
I found a photograph of a poppy and just loved the color. I like being able to see through the petals. It helps give it a 3 dimensional look. I put the photo in a projector and projected it to get the pencil drawing placed where I wanted it. I used craft paint to complete it. It took 3-4 days to paint.
Close up of the painting. When you are painting and looking for that life like look you can actually paint the back petals, the ones farthest from you first. Then when you get to painting the closest ones you can thin the paint a little and you will be able to “see through” them as you would in real life.
Suggested materials:
  • Craft acrylic paints   (Michaels)
  • 1/4” plywood   (Lowes)
