Please give more details, what do you need to organize? Is the basement finished into rooms or unfinished?

It is an open space, no division into rooms. I am overwhelmed and I'm not young. Don't know where to begin.

Move everything to me side then start to bring back the keepers or out to the trash.

And get your friends to help! It makes letting stuff go easier, and doesn't feel as much like a chore.

Do you want to use the space just for storage, or do you want to set it up for doing craft work and such, too?

If it isn't special to you, hasn't been used for a year or more, or isn't something that is used only on special occasions like holidays, get rid of it. Get some of those metal gray shelves to put by one wall and Rubbermaid bins to put things into. Label the bins as to what is in there. You should be able to fit a lot on those shelves, get more than one if you need to get more shelves. This will keep things off the floor and in one place. If you have furniture stored down there, why not take advantage of more space available and make a sitting area. You could make a work bench, or use a table and you can do crafts, sew, whatever in that area. If you have clothes that you want to store, get one of those kits that you put together and you hang your clothes in it and it zips shut and keeps them clean. I hope this gives you a place to start as least. Your basement may not be finished but it is still usable for many things!

I would use totes storing items such as kitchen, bathroom, child's room, etc. and label each so you can find something easily if necessary. Totes can be stacked or if you have shelving slide totes in with label on outside so you can easily remove what you need. Good luck!

If it’s large like mine, try breaking it up into functional activitiy spaces. A TV watching space, a card table or pub table and maybe a fire gazing space if you have a fireplace. Use rugs to make each space stand out as it’s own space.
