If you find yourself glancing around the bedroom, dining room, kitchen or living room thinking to yourself that it lacks character, perhaps you have your sights set on a home which has been taken straight out of the pages of Country Living Room magazine. If this is true of you, then it’s time to set aside a few minutes and think up some changes you could implement that go beyond merely laying a wooden floor and painting the walls.
Here are our 5 home hacks that might just be your ticket to creating the perfect farmhouse feel in your home.
Hang some themed paintings
If you conjure up the idea of a farmhouse, what does the interior look like? We bet the walls feature a couple of paintings, perhaps of a country scene complete with fields, horses and a couple of dogs running around. Adding a couple of carefully chosen appropriate paintings is an inexpensive way of immediately changing the feel and style of a room.
Lay a stone floor
When you think about a country-inspired home, what type of scene do you imagine? Cuddling up with a blanket and your favourite drink? Perhaps you’re picturing muddy boots and a tired but happy dog after a refreshing walk in the countryside? The items in our houses need to be practical as well as fitting in with our themes, and there’s nothing which says country home more than a limestone floor. Not only are these floors incredibly practical when it comes to cleaning, it’ll immediately add a country feel to a hallway or kitchen. A stone floor need not be expensive or difficult to clean. An easy and cheap option is to opt for tiles which replicate the irregular stone shape, these are both affordable and require very little maintenance.
Install a picture rail
Do your rooms feel ‘boxy’, lacking character or just plain boring. A picture rail may sound dated options, but once you decide on a strong colour scheme for the ceiling and space above the rail, you’ll quickly find that a rail brings with it a strong sense of character. All country-themed homes have character and details which are often accomplished with an emphasis on period features. If you don’t have existing period features, then adding a picture rail will instantly give charm to your interior design.
Choose to use wood panelling on your walls
No doubt about it, this is an option that should only be considered by the brave and bold. When wallpaper and feature walls are not enough, choosing to clad one wall with rustic and warming wood is an incredibly bold farmhouse feature which can be added to any home. If you’re keen on the concept, but a little wary of jumping in with both feet, consider a tongue and groove panel is better suited. This works fantastically well in bathrooms and will certainly bring about a farmhouse feel.
Use reclaimed wood for doors
I like to think there are 2 quick and easy ways to give your home a personal stamp, the first involves changing the light switches and sockets for something refined such as brass or chrome. The second involves removing the existing featureless white doors and swapping them for something more reclaimed. A scrap yard is a playground for anyone looking to recreate the farmhouse feel. Sand, stain and oil old doors which will bring a rustic feature to your house. You’ll also have a store and personal attachment to every door in your house.
