Ever wondered if that stiff and stubborn old sliding door could be brought back to life? In our case, the main entrance of our house is a sliding door which clearly gets lots of use. Over the years I have learnt the hard way that the solution is as simple as replacing the rollers. In this basic DIY project I show you how to change old worn out sliding door rollers to give you a trouble free door.
Broken vs New
Stop putting up with a sliding door that is difficult or even impossible to open. Relief is at hand with this simple changeover of those tired old rollers
Lifting the Door Out
Start by making sure you can remove the door. It is often simply a matter of lifting and pulling out the bottom far enough to allow the top to be free of it's track. You may have to adjust the rollers all the way in to get them out of the way, but even so, sliding doors are manufactured to be removed.
Check the Rollers
Place the door in a position where you can easily see the rollers. In this example the rollers are completely shattered. Remove the adjusting screw (on the left of picture) then remove the fixing screw in the middle. This will allow the complete roller casing to be removed.
New Rollers
At all good hardware outlets you will be able to purchase replacement rollers. There are several different types so make sure you get the right one by taking a photo or take the old roller with you.
Removing Old & Fitting New Rollers
Fit the new rollers just as you took out the old ones. Leaving the actual roller out of the way. Roller adjustment will happen after the door is in place.
Fitting
Place the door back in position by reversing the way you took it out. Then adjust the height of the door to make sure it is clear of the track and runs freely.
Check Alignment
Make final adjustments to the rollers to allow any locks to fit. Also, make sure the door is parallel to the door jamb for a neat draft free fit.
