TVs really do not belong over a fireplace. They should be at eye level when you are sitting on a sofa or chair. They also take away from the fireplace as a focal point.

    Hi,

I was also hoping to hang the television over our fireplace but the satellite installer said not to do that. We burn wood fires often and the chimney does get very hot which could invalidate the warranty and mess with the electronics.

I would not lower the mantel. The minimum height above the firebox is set by building code for safety reasons.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the advice. I know it’s odd to place a tv above the fireplace. My reasoning is that the room is long and narrow. A regular sized sofa in this room keeps you from being able to pass easily. The fireplace has a gas insert. If I could place the TV on the wall that the fireplace is on it would allow me to have a sofa and an two chairs. Small space issue. Maybe I just need a loveseat.

We've had a tv above the fireplace (gas logs) for years without any problem. If your tv has places on the back where you can attach a wire for hanging, drill holes in the cement between the bricks, not in the bricks, so you can patch the holes, should you change your mind about the size/shape of whatever you want to place in that space. Then, insert masonry anchors and attach wires to those. Alternately, to avoid damaging your brick wall, you can attach a decorative hanger to the crown molding above the fireplace, similar to the way heavy art work is hung in museums, etc. In a long room, a tv at a higher level than usual works fine so long as the tv is large enough for comfortable viewing at a distance that makes the height work. You also need to consider your sound system, making certain it works well at the distance you have in mind. Good luck!

There is a special drill bit and anchors for brick, you can buy them at any home improvement store.

There are masonary screws called tapcon, I helped build 2 masonary houses in my life time. You can get them @ Lowe's or home Depot. They are a pretty blue. I hung everything with tapcon screws in a all masonary house😊

You need a drill and a masonry drill bit in the size hole you need from the place you will be attaching to the brick, show Home Depot staff and I will only cost $5 the most and be sure to drill only into the mortar only. Slow and ez so you do t break the bit, I went through 5 trying to speed up the process.

I mounted my TV over our fireplace and have had no problems in four years. Also have a long and narrow living room. Nowhere else to put the TV. I have installed many TV's and many over fireplaces. Lisa is kind of mistaken. The old console TV's were never at eye level. Actually they were below eye level and you'd get a crick in your neck from watching. Over the fireplace is a great location. I rest my head against the back of my sofa and no crick.

I have had a large TV over my fireplace for at least 10 years and never had a problem. I have a wood burning fireplace with an insert with a blower. You can touch my brick and it is barely warm. I am having a 70 in installed tomorrow; again over the fireplace. They are heavy and would not considering installing myself. The present TV that is 56 inch. and it is still working very well and it is being moved to the family room. Fireplace installations are very common here.
