I place mine inside a black plastic garbage bag. Add ammonia, shut securely and let that sit in the summer sun for about 6 hours or longer. Pull them out wipe off and rinse well.

If any gunk left, soak for another day. CAUTION-Work in a well ventilated area. Make sure to keep any chlorine bleach or any product containing bleach or chlorine away from amonia. Will produce noxious gas that can make you VERY sick or even cause death. !

I soaked mine in water and fabric softener sheets, worked great for me!
There is a caustic product for Rayburns and woodburners that might do it
